Barn in Moonlight

One of the things that interests me about photography is the way it makes me pay attention to light and vision.  This shot was taken in the moonlight.  To my eye, there was no color, just the shape of my barn.  That's because our color perceiving cells, the cones, don't function with low light.  But a camera sees color fine in low light -- so long as the exposure is long enough!

Walk-in Pinhole Camera at Penland

This is an image from the large walk-in pinhole camera at Penland School of Crafts.
It was made on a huge sheet of photo paper, processed in the darkroom and washed here.

Here is a positive. the white object in the front is a greenhouse.

Black and white can be a great look with light painting.

This is an example of the pan technique.  I'm shooting at 1/20th of a second, but I'm moving the camera with my friend Gib.  Actually, I'm moving with this head -- his hand and legs are blurred, as is the bowling alley.

This is an image made of many different images. I used layers in Photoshop to create the effect of motion and chaos.

Joe Knows

The path

Between 'exist' and 'exit,' there is a serpentine path.  But an ant crawling along an S thinks he's going straight a lot of the time.
